Hey Guys,
Well after some tests, I have found that trying to retexture oni from scratch would take me a loooooooooooooooong time, haha. Just the training level alone would probably take several weeks to get it to the quality I would like to see.
Unfortunately because of other projects I am going to have to put a hold on this little endeavor for now, but I may keep chiseling away little by little from time to time. Regardless I wanted to share some of the work I did, I didn't want you to think all your great help went to waste .
Some of the improvements I was working on (In the attached Sample)
- Re-creating the textures in 512x512.
- Adding little details to help improve the aesthetic
- Updated sky lights
- high detail metal and rubber floors
- hi res concrete textures with new decals
- replaced training room sign with LCD display for a more high tech look
- Added light LED lights to walls and doors
- Updated the main exit door with hi-res texture and decals
Some things that could be improved upon
- new level lighting to make it a bit brighter with dynamic skylights
- flare lights on all the LED's to make them glow properly
- animated textures for the LCD screen to make it look like a virtual device.
If/when I do more updates I will definitely post them for you guys to see the progress. And I am pretty handy with photoshop so if you guys have any questions let me know and I will try my best to answer them

Is there any way I could take a look at the files themselves? And don't worry about time, we've got plenty of that.

You mean the PSD's? Sure, do you have some type of place I could upload them to?
I wish I had more free time, I would love to make this game sparkle .

ViciousReilly: Can we get the actual oni files of your textures so we can see them in game ourselves.
You could post the files as an attachment on this forum

On new lighting: Currently we can't really do that. Adding lighting to a level isn't one of our abilities yet.
By flare lights, do you mean particle effects? Like doorlights and such? If so, it can be a bit of a pain in the arse to do, but I'll teach you how.
On the Monitor: Good idea. Though some people think the whole place is "virtual".

Next time I'd suggest putting them in a zip file first.

Oh yeah, haha. I wasn't sure how large a single attachment could be.

Very nice! I'm pretty interested in texturing myself too.. So, which tools did you use to recreate the textures?

I use photoshop for all my texture edits.

Well, thanks for your work so far, VR. There's no question that this would be a long-term project. Perhaps at some point we will have others willing and able to contribute to the re-texturing. The original textures in a game usually aren't all done by one person, so it would only be reasonable to have more than one person re-texturing, after all. In fact I did have someone else interested in re-texturing. If you're out there, you know who you are, let's try to chat again sometime soon, okay?
Mod note: I didn't realize the files would be so large. Ideally, instead of attaching them to a post, one would use a site like drop.io to hold them (and then you could zip them without concern for a maximum file size; that is, I think drop.io allows up to 100MB). Just a note for your future reference, or if you upload "standard format" versions of your new textures like Pierre wanted.

It looks great. Really, really, nice. It makes Oni look like a new game, and this brighter look is a lot more modern. Congrats !

...well if there's an easy way to extract the textures from those "Oni" files, I can also try that. Sorry, I didn't really follow how the mods you guys did, so I'm not sure what those files are.

Pierre: Here are the textures in Targa (tga) format:

dream996: The textures are visible in the first training room.

Hey, looks good!

Thanks for re uploading them in Targa format EdT. If you guys need or want PSD's to see how they were created let me know and I will find a file hosting site to put them on.

Iritscen: Yep I understand that it would probably take a team of artists to get something like this in gear. I work in the videogame industry, right down the street from bungie actually lol. We have well over 30 people who work on textures for the team I am on so I can see how something like this would be a huge undertaking.
Although I think what we would be trying to do with Oni would actually be alot easier than what a current gen game workload would be since we don't have to worry about bump, spec, and normal maps.
Actually doing this texture work was fairly easy for me, the main issue is I just don't have time to work on them .

I guess you're right, at least Oni doesn't have all that mapping to worry about. And the textures are fairly simple and in some cases just need "a new coat of paint" -- although in other cases I think they need total reconstructive surgery; have you ever seen my screenshot of this horrifying sight?: http://iritscen.oni2.net/images/Bad%20textures.png . Those wall and floor textures are a crime against eyeballs!
