Hey there. The Japanese version looks the same as the English, doesn't it? As far as I know, only the dialogue was changed. It's cool that you got a copy, though.

japanese version of oni is definitely rare especially the mac version. but still not as rare as japanese pathways into darkness. in 10 years of collecting japanese pc & mac games i have only seen 2 copies of pathways.

Hah, wow, I wouldn't have even thought that Bungie was localizing for the Far East back then.

Since 3 years I try to learn Japanese.
I would be happy to be able to play Oni with japanese language.
I own 2 PC versions from Rockstar and Green Pepper and a PS/2 version, but unfortunately none in Japanese.

I do not know how many Japanese members there are in the Oni Central forum.
Would it be possible and legally to create a Oni AE mod for Japanese language output?
ONI is the best game in the universe!

Such a mod was attempted, but I think it ran into technical issues on the font side of things. Unfortunately it would not be legal to distribute it. Look for an email, I'll tell you a bit more about the issue.

I had a version of it that worked just fine. Did it get removed from mod depot? If that's the case, should probably take down http://mods.oni2.net/node/15 too.

If you want it back up, I still have it on my hard drive.

No, that's fine. That's a text-only mod. A full localization mod would contain audio and potentially translated textures, which is a lot of data to be distributing freely.

I got a thing in the mail today - some guy emailed me because of a comment I made either on somebody's blog or niconico years ago. Wonder where these copies were when I last looked?

Great stuff Gumby. Can you check the data on that disk? Anything interesting?

I'd also be curious to look at the game application to see how it's been modified for displaying Japanese. I can still run original Oni on my G4.

You should have asked me that a few years ago when I had the dumps of the oni jp version on my pc, sigh.

Isn't the disc in this copy readable? And would you mind doing some scans of the box and its contents for our collection on the wiki?

Sorry, I lost my login for the last 3.5 years. I still have the disc here. But, its weird to see half Text on the menu using the English patch.
I will post Pictures soon.
I can make all the files in one .rar file if anyone is interested.

Yes, unfortunately the game app that we normally distribute cannot display non-English characters, so the text will cut off when it reaches such a character in a string. We can't promote piracy here, so distributing the full JP game would not be permitted, but you could definitely post some pictures.

It's been about eight years since I've posted here but I just discovered there was a Japanese version of Oni! How cool is that? I'd love to find a way to play it. I tried installing the Mac version in an emulator but then I realized emulators don't support games that require hardware acceleration.
If anyone has any links to gameplay videos, screenshots, or other cool stuff about Oni in Japanese I'd love to see it. I've made a lot of progress in my Japanese these past eight years and I can help with translation if anybody needs it.

Hey Charles, long time no see. This thread has some serious longevity >.<
Just for the record, some virtualization software supports 3D acceleration. Performance is not great but it's more than good enough for a game from 2001. I use VMware Fusion to play Oni in Windows on my Intel Mac.
Some of us have looked at the Japanese version of Oni, and its content is not substantially different from the English version in the sense of resources that we haven't seen before, but it is pretty cool to hear the game in Japanese. There doesn't seem to be much documentation of the Japanese version in terms of playthroughs or screenshots, just this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkRjlDtYsqg. We started some technical documentation here, though it will only be of interest to a few: https://wiki.oni2.net/OBD:Localization/Japanese.
P.S.: Most of us are hanging out on Discord now.

Since it is a largely Japanese-inspired game with a Japanese title, I think getting the chance to play it in Japanese would take the whole atmosphere to the next level.
That's good to hear about the PC version in VMWare, but I'm very partial to the Mac. I may have to look on eBay for someone's old G4 or something.
In the mean time, do you think it's possible to extract the subtitles? I know almost all the lines by heart and would love to get a look at them. I'll try to meet up with you guys on Discord (I'll have to figure out how to use it, first).
