A lot of Oni enthusiasts come to the forum requesting help with getting Oni running under Microsoft's Windows XP. Launching the game will prompt you with a rather humerous yet uninformative error message and Oni will quit.
According to Ian Patterson, Oni crashes at the point where OpenGL begins to initialize then fails. Ian analysed the Oni executabled and found that the game would try to launch with a fixed buffer size, and if something ever tried to print more than that fixed number to a logfile, Oni would crash - and this is exactly what happened when users tried to play Oni in XP.
Ian reverse-engineered the executable, increased the buffer size, and managed to get Oni to run on Windows XP again.
Because Take 2 and Gathering seem to refuse to properly support Oni, the community has stepped in to ensure that Oni can still be played today even in XP.
