Oni on Mac mini G4 at 1280 x 1024

Hello. I have been looking for everywhere on how to run Oni at 1280 x 1024 on a Mac mini G4 but have found no answers. The highest resolution I am able to run the game in is 1280 x 768, which makes the game look a little distorted.

I have the latest version, version 1.36, installed on a Mac mini G4 running OS 10.4.11.

By the way, are the intro movies and menu supposed to be small, since they are not built on the in-game graphics? I can see where stretching them would result in pixelated images for modern resolutions.

Please respond quickly! I am eager in revisiting this game!

I wish I could give you a definite answer, on my PowerPC G4, I have the option for 1280x1024, perhaps, its an issue with the the Mac Mini's video card. What size display are you using?

Even though it might not look as good, you might have to settle with a lower screen resolution. Yes, the intro movie and menu will be small.

Its nice to see another Mac user :-)

Be sure to explore the forum, we have an exciting project call Anniversary Edition, you will be able to do lots of cool mods with it, including adding new characters to the game.

Do you have any 3D, graphics, Mac programming skills? If so, perhaps you can help in improving Oni.

I am using a 17" Acer LCD display. I am not too sure it has to do with the graphics card, since I can easily run OS X in 1280 x 1024.

I do not have any programming skills, although I would be interested in learning. The Oni API does not look very difficult to learn compared to other API's.

One interesting mod I might explore is "Oni Team Arena".

Hmmm ... interesting. Your screenshot does not even have any options for 16-bit gameplay. Could it be that you used a patch that I did not use?

Well I'm using a 22" monitor, normally set to 1680x1050, but I'm limited to the above resolutions for Oni.

Here is the latest unofficial "patched", "hacked" version: http://edt.oni2.net/files/Oni.zip
This version has Dev Mode, Works on Intel, can use level plugins.

Since you are interested in scripting, here you can find the script commands:

Hmmm ... the "patched" version does not seem to do anything for me, although I did discover something interesting.

Apparently, I am only able to run Oni at 1280 x 1024 when using the -noswitch command. Then again, the menu bar does get in the way.

Is there a way to have the resolution available fullscreen, knowing this information, or would I have to have manually hide the menu bar?

All help is appreciated!

Apparently, one can easily add a resolution they wish to use for any monitor by changing a DLL file for the Windows version of "Oni".

If this is possible with the Windows version, then I say this should be possible with the Mac version.

A person with a 1680x1050 resolution monitor should be able to play at 1680x1050. A person with a 1280 x 1024 monitor should be able to do so, likewise.

Sorry, I have nothing else to add. There is no official support for Oni, all the modifications have been done by the community. We don't have anyone with Mac programming experience that can deal with these issues.

I can't imagine why the hacked OS X port wouldn't work, though, I think it does for everyone else. hsd67, what do you mean by "doesn't do anything for me"? It just quits when it tries to open?

No, I was referring to the fact that the OS X version of "Oni" seems to list lower resolutions than the maximum resolution of the monitor the person is using. 1280 x 1024 does not show up, but 1024 x 768 does.

Oh, sorry, I jumped into the thread without really paying attention. All I can tell you is, my MBP is natively 1680x1050, but I play at 1024x768. It's not even the right aspect ratio, so I have vertical black bars on each side (I think so, at least; I've gotten used to it). But them's the breaks.

Well, thank you for your time, anyway. I've already made it to the "Deadly Brain" boss in Chapter 2 using the 1024 x 768 resolution, so I have, one way or another, become used to it.

Hopefully, a patch in the future will fix this. Or even better, Bungie will officially re-release "Oni" with modern standards.

Still, the latter seems like asking a bit too much from Bungie at the moment.

I'm actually leaving for a month, starting today. But yeah, I'll be around after that. Have fun trying out the mods when you finish your initial runthrough! And who knows, a resolution patch is a possibility someday.
