Custom Characters

Here's a thread for all you modders to post your custom Oni characters.

This is my first attempt, inspired by geyser's Black Ops Konoko

BlackOpsKonoko.jpg

To read how this was done:
http://wiki.oni2.net/OBD_talk:TRMA

The files: http://edt.oni2.net/AE/BlackOpsKonoko.zip

You will need to put both files in the level0_Folder and then recompile. You can either access this character by shapeshifting or by changing the BINACJBOCharacter.oni CHAR reference for Konoko to this one. When I have more time, I will post a tutorial on the wiki (Another to do item)

To read how this was done:

He used a hex editor, pure and simple.

Re: Custom Characters

As a reminder/tip for testing or using these: you may prefer unpack the TXMP*.oni into a level folder rather than into level0_Final.
That way, you will have, e.g., black Strikers replacing red ones only in Chapter 7, and you'll still have the red ones elsewhere.

It's a lot faster to rebuild a single level (takes literally a couple of seconds).
It also allows you to test a lot of new textures without overwriting anything.
When you're more fluent, you can try and do local TRMA, TRBS and ONCC.

Re: Custom Characters

Script10k asked me to make a orange one, so here it is, it looks nearly as the EASY normal striker, but still you can see it has changed a little.

strikerorangezc0.th.jpg

I will start reskinning the elite strikers in the same colors.

My next post will possibly be the Black one. And i will see if i can get the image larger so it is easier to see it tongue

Re: Custom Characters

Rexxar: Very cool.  Have you thought of increasing the resolution of your mods?  This may produce nicer looking textures.
The maximum size can be 256x256 pixels.  The current sizes may be 64x64 or 128x128

Looks like that is a PC only feature, I tested it and still get the default Strikers colors, not the new ones.

Heh. Indeed. I'll have to talk to Neo, since I was under the firm impression that local stuff overrides global.
It's ironic that I should issue such a worthless tip without ever taking the time to actually check it myself...
Bottom line is: you can only test new character textures that way if you also add a new TRMA and ONCC.
All the TXMP should have names that are not used in level0_Final. Same for the TRMA and for the ONCC.

Re: Custom Characters

Here is Rexxar's Black Striker as a separate character.  Put all the files in level0_Folder and recompile.
You can shapeshift into him or you can add him to a level by using the model name striker_hard_4.

As geyser stated, I renamed the TXMPs, so the original red striker TXMPs are still there.

Re: Custom Characters

Better try your hand at adding reflectifity to currently non-shiny metal parts wink

Re: Custom Characters

Well, I told you to take the time to experiment with the alpha mask, didn't I? The GIMP makes it easy not only to preserve it, but to paint over it as well.
For example, try and make a Black Ops variant of Konoko's TCTF uniform. The new thing to try out here is edit out the "TCTF"s on Konoko's chestpack.
You will notice that the "TCTF"s are not reflective, whereas the surrounding armor is. So you'll have to cover up the TCTF in both the image and mask...
Practically, once you have transferred the alpha to the mask, set Show ON and Edit ON and cover the black (non-reflective) TCTF with white (reflective).
Then set Show OFF and Edit OFF (thus getting back to color editing) and cover up the TCTF writings with appropriate shades of gray. Apply mask, save.
Once you're done with this rather simple example, you'll have more control and understanding of just what parts of your texture are reflective and why.

Re: Custom Characters

Just for those who may not have made the connection, these kinds of single-color characters lend themselves very well to multiplayer, whether it's to designate teams (think Halo's red vs. blue) or to choose 'your' signature color (like my buddies and I used to do in Marathon).  I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of Bungie West's original intent.

Rexxar, if you ever get a handle on Alpha Masks, I'd like to ask you the favor of applying reflectivity to the weapons pack I made for the edition.  No obligation, obviously, that one's up to you.

Re: Custom Characters

Be careful of volunteering too much around here Rexxar, there's always more work to go around than people tongue

The OC community has had pretty much everything over the years except a dedicated texture artist.  If you'd like to take on that role, I have 2 rocket launchers and the chaingun which have been unfinished for about 2 years.  If you're interested let me know, geyser will be happy to finally have them at least...

Re: Custom Characters

I am not sure, i havent any experience at painting, i only know a few things about it. I can draw a full gun with only the meshes, so dont expect anything, but I'll think about it.
