Re: All time favorite games ..

0. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
1. Halo: Combat Evolved (Not even a rushed 8-month dev cycle could hold this baby down... Except for the Bethesda-tier QA. Yay for bugs)
2. Valkyria Chronicles (Should be obvious at this point inbetween my avatar and desktop background)
2. Spec Ops: The Line (Yes, I didn't accidentally miss the 3 key)
3. Killzone 2 (Possibly most innovative multiplayer ever)
4. Halo 3: ODST (Yay for a game that's all about the core SP/Coop experience)
5. MAG (Who needs an 18 player Nuketown meatgrinder, OR a 64 player Metro meatgrinder, when you can have a 256 player meatgrinder on three maps? Yay for meatgrinder map design)
6. Black Ops 2 (Meatgrinder 2: Electric Boogalo)
7. Counter Strike: Global Offensive (Well, when matchmaking doesn't place me with K/DR obsessed sperglords. If I wanted to stare at a K/DR counter I'd play COD.
9. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (Most replayable of series IMO. Plus coop.)
10. Borderlands 2 (Nice RPG, as in: MORE OF AN RPG THAN MASS EFFECT OR ELDER SCROLLS, but I don't play it much anymore)

And: The Buyer's Remorse List

1. Modern Warfare 3 (Sorry IW, very few developers can pull through a rushed dev cycle and salvage a decent product from it. You are not one of those developers. Treyarch, maybe, however)
2. Battlefield 3 (No mods. Locked down server binaries. Forum ban = game ban. DLC milkage. Mediocre, overhyped engine. It all reeks of nothing more than an attempt to fish in a quick buck off the COD audience. They didn't bite.)
2B. Dead Space 3 (And they never will. Learn your lesson while you can EA.)
3. Halo 4* (Attempt at gathering the COD audience. Gimped custom-content to promote DLC (See: EA and Activision strategy). Piss-poor balancing. No public beta, breaking the long-running tradition. More bugs than Halo 1 and 2 together. Content reusage up the ass (More than COD). Artstyle that makes most old Halo fans' eyes' bleed in pain. 343 Industries, you all abused the respect you've built up these past 5 years. Hell, even one guy on the dev team I have talked to says he finds more enjoyment in BO2 than he finds in the product he spent the past 3 years working on. Don't repeat this mistake again, because you can/will destroy the IP in half the time it took Bungie to build it's reputation/identity.)
4. Borderlands 1 (Ok, I got it after I got Borderlands 2, that probably influenced me now. Borderlands 1 is such a dull game compared to it's sequel.)
5. SOCOM 4 (Fun for burning time, but so dumbed down to hell from it's predecessor.)
6. Killzone 3 (See: SOCOM 4)

3B* For reference by what I mean by it's artstyle being horrible... Remember when I said most anime makes me cringe? Well, it turns out, quite a few of the graphic-designers for the game happened to also be credited for work on a few (IMO) cringe-worthy animes. Such as: Halo Legends. Yeah, sorry. Asian architecture IST NICHT Forerunner architecture. I could go on, but then that's delving heavily into OT territory.

Re: All time favorite games ..

Here are a few of mine, in random order:

Oni
Diablo -> Diablo II
Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam
Quake -> Quake III
Grand Theft Auto 2 - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings -> Age of Empires II: The Conquerors + Forgotten Kingdoms
Call of Duty
WarCraft II: Battle.net Edition -> WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne
Tekken -> Tekken III

I've probably forgotten quite a bunch, but I'm way too tired to fetch up my games collection to remind myself of all the time I've wasted playing video games. smile

Re: All time favorite games ..

Mmm so many games I don't know .. tongue
i'm usually turned off by purely shooter games like call of duty, and horror games though i do enjoy some darker themes too much blood flying around isn't something i'd have fun with. Grand theft auto i don't like that u play a bad character tongue ... I loved tomb raider 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 but i can't replay them due to how bad the graphics look nowadays and compatability issues with windows 7, but they gave a sense of exploration and mystery and excitement when i first played them years ago .. Tomb raider anniversary gave that same feeling while legend and underworld felt too modern to be tomb raider.
I've always wanted to try final fantasy ..
I forgot 'fable' and 'heavy metal f.a.k.k 2' as some of my favorite games as well.

What's deux ex and diablo like ?

Whoa, did you just call Call of Duty a shooter?

No man, it's the most sophisticated Point-and-Click adventure of a all time. Hell, they even figured out how to make a decent multiplayer mode out of it.

Hey, awesome list you got there, Knox. I don't know exactly how high I would rank my favourite games, but I would seriously include BioShock 2 and Alice: Madness Returns. Also, Dishonored, Elder Scrolls, etc. (Too much Bethesda, I know, I just can't help it!) STALKER was cool too. I'd also have a list of favourite 'casual' games; there, you would find League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, et cetera. Not nearly as relevant to me as the first list, to be honest.

By the way... Citizen Kabuto, I keep hearing that name... What is it about?

Re: All time favorite games ..

@Samer: Deus Ex is an FPS, but it's basically *the* FPS.  It gives you a lot of freedom to play as you want, and you choose how to upgrade yourself using nanomachines as the game progresses.  Definitely play the original first, not the recent Human Revolution (HR was good, but it's the typical modern watered-down version of the original).

@Knox: Oh yeah, Psychonauts is very cool.

Re: All time favorite games ..

Well..... Samer the good game is the game that you return to, even if the graphics is horrible nowadays..that's the factor which allow you to recognize good games from bad ones.
If you can't play this game because graphic is bad then this is not a good game for you.

I still can play this horrible looking UFO EU, or terror (even lunched by dos box - the remake is not even close to the original-to much simplification) Deus Ex , Re2 , MGS , or Duke Nukem 3D etc- because thous are the best games I ever played.
And graphics its really subjective thing.
For example I really like the Fear Effect graphics - Who cares that this game is from first generation Play Station - in my eyes it beat by head most of the newest titles.
Or MGS..i never saw other game that is so rich in details like this on. Smoking to reduce the stress(or depamina), or small light and smoke from cigarette, not to mention shape memory alloy key?
Dueus Ex- Probably the best RPG in FPP view. You can do there almost everything..And even can get a boss note(not pleasant one) if you spend to much time stalking around in womans bathroom. And how many games allow you to be pacifist to do progress in game(even get XP)?
Or resident evil games from firs true series (also Dino crisis 1) that allow you to fill desperation in the zombie Apocalypse? There you will spend more time running from zombies, hunters l,, etc..than fighting with them. Because ammunition is a rare thing(especially on the start). and your main goal is to survive..And getting hurt is not a pleasant thing(no stupid lost of health only) but also major slow down in moving(animation change)..so escape become more desperate? So how many modern games allow you this?

Now games are stupid idiotic brainless shits ..for mases without any challenge in them. So coaled "Achievements" are nothing in comparison to use your brain to solve the riddles/puzzles, etc from the old games (use your own notes to wrote number to nearest door on paper when you spot or hear it). Or draw map in on paper (like in good old time RPG's)

The old games were done in majority for adult viewer, and not for brainless 12-ears old INTERNET child(WIWA!!! Call of Duty shit....).They use strong language, sex, gore, etc where it should be(not as addition to get attention of teenagers). And where less Idiotically "political proper"...

Re: All time favorite games ..

I'll crib a couple more from Jon God's list since he jogged my memory:
- SimCity 2000
- Portal
- maybe Escape Velocity, but I never managed to get very far without cheating, due to boredom or difficulty

I bet you'll like Psychonauts, Samer, and it's a unique game.

And I agree with ltemplar, great games transcend graphics.  It's understandable that some games look too painful to play at first (FFVII does *not* hold up graphically, those early 3D games in general are hard on the eyes), but eventually you get used to it.  By the way, ltemplar, I made a point of exploring the women's bathrooms in Deus Ex:HR to see if I got an email about it, and never did, but I think I did get a report that *someone* was stealing from employee's desk drawers (ahem).

Uh, yeah, now that I read that ... Settlers 2 big_smile Especially after it's gotten a new engine (which uses the original graphics etc but runs on any modern platform) it's great to play again. Already lined up for a session with friends this weekend wink

@ltemplar: Fully agree ... I always hate when my friends want to play all those new games just because "they look sooooo good/realistic". A few games I regularly play and are quite outdated are a few posts up there. But even stuff like CS ... I don't like the newer ones, my favourite is still CS1.5. Friends always want to play the latest versions with highest requirements possible sad
Oh, probably almost noone knows: Bombs and Bugs. Even playing with my gf wink

i disagree .. They were ''good'' for me and i still have good memories from them but for tomb raider 1 and 2  the graphics become too bad for me to enjoy it ... Thus i prefer to keep them in my memory as great games of that time rather than revisit them and change my mind .. However for the other tomb raider 3 to 5 (chronicles) they don't run on windows 7 for some reason .. So even if i wanted to re-play them i can't, and therefore i didn't post them in my original list .. So you were kinda stating the obvious there smile Tomb raider Anniversary is basically a remake of tomb raider 1, thus it's my favorite. angel of darkness is the only game i don't like in the entire series .. And i didn't play lara croft and guardian of light .. I'm waiting for the new game to be released soon.
However i never play games just because they look cool or have better graphics .. Tomb raider underworld has good graphics better than anniversary but i don't like it as much cz as i said anniversary is basically a remake of tomb raider 1. So why would i go replay 1 when I have anniversary.
Most of the games i mentioned are considered old .. Rayman2, second sight, oni but still they are my favs.

Re: All time favorite games ..

" By the way, ltemplar, I made a point of exploring the women's bathrooms in Deus Ex:HR to see if I got an email about it" - Well..the Deus EX: HR unfortunately ..isn't so great as the first one(simplification - as the players were idiots unable to get to station for upgrade - however the kept manual password writing.), but add last it's not a total fail as the second one(invisible wars).

There were also other games that were interesting for example: "No one lives Forever" , settlers(II , III),Civilization 2, Heroes of M&M 3 ,SW: KOTOR (1,2) ,Empire Earth(1 and addon), etc, etc. that were popular and played on that time, but theirs charm passed (for me that is). I also played FF(VII,VIII) or Chrono Trigger but I'm not in the JRPG's things..so maybe thats why I don't recall thous titles sooner?

I especially love to watch all thous youtube "Let's play" series when fresh evolved from "Children of Internet syndrome" peoples try to beat the classic games like resident evil 2,3 Dino Crisis 1 and are dying on every step..or get frustrated by "Super Hard" puzzles....It's so funny(especially when solve for this puzzle is laying 2 screens from them).- and I know that some are "fake"(done by people that beat this game many times)- but you will notice this after few parts of his/her? Lp.

Thats why I was so disappointed when I saw thous riddles/trophies in newest batman games(when he have time to put all thous trophies , joker tooths, balloons, etc there?). And I'm sure that Batman don't get his "the greatest detective" title by solving .."How can I get that trophies from ventilation vest thing" i think.

Samer ..you think that you don't return to them because of graphics? So what about Dune 2 for example that I can still ply by HRs, where infantry man is done from 8-12 pixels?
So what I wrote is true..When the game pass the graphic exam..when it have this "thing" that force you to return to it..then and only then it's the "good game" for you.
If the game is "old" because of graphics then only the graphics was that factor that make it good for you that time...
Great titles are thous that can withstand that.
And answering " So why would i go replay 1 when I have anniversary." - because Anniversary is different from the first tomb rider - thats why(its more legend than the first one or the second one)- the only similar thing is the story and Lara.

Re: All time favorite games ..

It definitely true that a lot of LPers don't seem to be good at their games, but I'm not sure if it's connected to the fact that they didn't play challenging games when they were younger.  I mean, I'm not doing so hot at these Mega Man games as I revisit them, and I did play them, and other hard games like Kid Icarus, when I was little.  I think a lot of it is a failure to understand the importance of practicing the game right before recording the LP.  It's a natural trait in kids to lack the attention or willingness to spend the time practicing, and also to assume that we're going to be patient with them as they keep dying in every area.

Re: All time favorite games ..

"It's a natural trait in kids to lack the attention or willingness to spend the time practicing" Well you are probably right. But the point is that Lp from new game look quite nice and from old game look bad. So what causing this? The answer is simple. Old games don't give you cheek point in every corner. Thats what make them hard. The puzzles were also more "intelligent" than today's games. The main factor of thous games were skills (You will not progress until you learn how). Now you have thous "tree points" that you can use to "progress" in game(, so less thinking , or manual skill is required), and games do the "hard work" more for you - see batman h2h combat topic.
I'm not also a pro gamer my self , but i cant understand today's genre simplification (that player is brimless zombie that can't think by himself). so you get clue or "help" on every corner(so you will not "stuck").In old genre games thous things were also but to find thous "clues" require from him to do some exploration/thinking. Not everything was served on "silver tray" .
