Welcome to Oni Central Forum.

It is good to see a modder with experience.  You might start off looking at the list of tutorials.

What types of software do you use?

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

You mean like scripting?

-I noticed that the hackers of oni community made a lot of modifications before they locked me up, do you have any idea what they want with an old game? -Modifications? What kind of modifications?
-Hard to tell, without getting a look at things but it looks like they're repurposing it. -Why?
-Beats me, all the game has is brutal melee combat and furious gunplay. -I dont like the sound of that.....

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

Quick start guide:

- Firstly, if you are using Windows, I suggest downloading OniSplit GUI. It is useful to convert between a lot of file types. What you'll need is to convert .oni to .xml, and .xml back to .oni.

- You will find a lot of .oni files in the 'GameDataFolder', specially in 'level0_Final'. For what each of them do, you'll have to look at the other tutorials. You open OniSplit GUI, go to the tab "ONI - XML", and in the "ONI -> XML" box, put the destination to the .oni file and the destination to a folder, in wich the .xml file will be put.

- After it is finished, you can easily edit the .xml file if you have any knowledge about XML. Then, convert the .xml back to an .oni using the same tab of OniSplit GUI, but with the "XML -> ONI" box.

- Then, you create a package. You can simply copy and paste a package similar to yours, and replace the files inside with the ones you made. Don't forget to edit the "Mod_Info" file and the name of the package (should be an unique 5-numbers code and then a name).

- If you did everything right, the package now appears in the list in the AE Installer and you can install and test it.

I know this guide is a bit vague, but it is just a quick start.

Yeah, I'll add that XML's can be edited in notepad and probably the best files to start editing are the TRACs. TRAC is nothing else than a movelist for a certain character. You can for example edit Konoko's TRAC to make her use moves of other characters.

Yes, you can edit it by notepad.
To turn the dev mode you don't press ~, you have to press F1 and then X.

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

Wait a minute, I was drunk yesterday. You activate the dev mode by pressing F1 (diary thingy) and then X. Then, you quit the diary and you can activate the console by pressing ~. If you don't see your console, then it's because you're running on a too big resolution. The console works, but you can't see it. Try lowering your resolution if you want to see what you write in the console.

Er, isn't ~ the same button as `? Like on my keyboard? And yes, a cmd should appear on bottom left.

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

That is more complicated and frustrating... To make new levels you can use Google SketchUp. To put characters in levels you have to edit XML files.
Refer to this page: http://wiki.oni2.net/SketchUp_tutorials_and_tips

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

It is relatively easy. You just need some knowledge about XML. Look here if you know nothing about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML

Example:
- Convert "ONCCkonoko_generic.oni" to .xml.
- Open the XML file and locate the "<Gravity>" tag.
- Change "<Gravity>0.04</Gravity>" to "<Gravity>0.02</Gravity>".
- Convert back to .oni and put inside a simple package.
- Run AE Installer and test your mod.

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

Sounds like you're talking about the BSLs. Which also open in notepad, although that's a whole different area from XML editing.

Re: I'm starting to mod, Any tips?

Yes you can edit it, with the right know-how, and no, you can't turn it into XML. BSL is the thing that tells stuff what to do and when. When to start and stop music, when do spawn guys, etc.
