I'm trying to modify a head texture for a Striker. Problem is I'm very new to modding Oni, and I don't know how to extract and edit character textures.

Its not too difficult I'll try to walk you through it.
1. Open up OniSplit - and go to the "texture" tab
2. Now the top portion is where you need to look at (TXMP -> DDS/TGA/PNG) Keep TGA (Targa image) selected
3. Use the browse option to find the .oni you need to convert - this being found in (oni/edition/install/vanilladats/level0_final/level0_final/*level0_Final.oni*)
4. Make a new folder and use that for the target directory
5. Click convert!
----------------------------------------------
Now you'll have a ton of images in that folder but there are only a few that you need they are any of these
TXMPSTR_EASY_1%2FSTRheadE
TXMPSTR_EASY_1%2FSTRheadF
TXMPSTR_EASY_1%2FSTRheadH
TXMPSTR_HARD_1%2FSTRhead
TXMPSTR_HARD_1%2FSTRheadG
TXMPSTR_MED_1%2FSTRhead
TXMPSTR_MED_1%2FSTRheadC
TXMPSTR_MED_1%2FSTRheadH
Choose one and open it in your image editing program.
1. You will probably want to resize the image to 256x256 (or 512x512 for the best quality)
2. Make your changes - but be sure to check the "Alpha" channel for reflectivity (its on greyscale so white is the most reflective to black being unreflective) as you will want any metal bits to be reflective
3. Save back out as a targa (but be sure to save you progress elsewhere since you'll most likely be coming back for edits!)
---------------------------------------------
Importing back into Oni
1. Open Onisplit as before
2. Same texture tab - but now take your focus to the bottom section.
3. Place your new texture in "source file"
4. Select bgra32 (this supports transparency/reflectivity)
5. Check Envmap (this is your reflection map) And type in "TXMPstrikerarmor" over "name of envmap"
6. Choose somewhere for the target directory - and check "large" if you used 512x512
7. Convert!
------------------------------------------
Test it out!
If you haven't made your own package look up how to do so - theres a tab for it in onisplit which isnt to difficult to figure out
Otherwise just hitch a ride on another package that changes textures in the meantime (aka throw your new "TXMPSTR_MED_1%2FSTRheadH.oni" into another package)

Thanks.
EDIT: Nothing shows up in the target directory.
EDIT EDIT: Never mind. I once again underestimated the power of running as an admin.

Is it possible to edit them in MS Paint? 'Cause that's the most user friendly to me.

I don't mean to burst any bubbles here, but you aren't going to get anything worth keeping using MS Paint.
You can try using PNG images instead of the TGA's (do the first part again just extract PNG) but you wont be able to use and kind of reflectivity since there are no channels.
But in the end, if all you have is Paint - and I mean no offense - you shouldnt be doing texture mods (however the process of extraction and importing will be a good learning experience and you will see your results)

What about PaintNET? So far, it's the only thing I can use to edit textures.
EDIT: After looking at the textures, I now see why everyone hates Strikers
Guess I'll try tanker instead.

In any case, textures of characters can seem distorted, but you just have to imagine that the texture will be applied to the head of the character, just like if you would drop a piece of cloth on a ball.

I'm doing a simple head texture mod: Purple haired Tanker.

Go for it! We all start somewhere. I remember spending hours playing around with different color schemes for the characters. Oh man, I gotta pick up modding sometime soon again.

If you don't find something good, you can always use good, free GIMP

I'm done with purple haired tanker, how do I make it into a package?
EDIT: Never mind, I've canned the whole thing. God, I suck at modding....

Heyyyyyyyyyy ... i sucked first time too ^_^
but u have to have the right tools, lots of patience and the will to experiment ^_^
download Gimp, that's as close as u'll get to Photoshop which is best for this type of thing .
http://www.gimp.org/
u can't do much with MSpaint ... for example to make the hair purple u may in paint, draw over it with the brush tool .. getting a solid color, while in gimp u have a colorize option where u can really 'color' the hair purple keeping all the details, instead of just painting over it ...

Cool. And you can edit the textures and keep them in the same format?

@Bozzman How do I get it in game? And how do I test it out?

Well once youve converted the file back into a .oni file, all you need to do is put it into a package and install it.

Sorry for asking, but how do you make a mod package?
EDIT: Never mind, it's done. And it was a pain.
