Which Video card is better ... ?

So I got a new PC

Here are it's specs :

*Intel CPU quad core @ 2.93 GHz

*4 GB RAM

(running Windows 7)

Now, for the video card, VGA , the PC came with :

Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD (Core i3) with Graphics Memory : 1042 MB

I was planning to get Nvidia 9500 with 1 GB graphics memory

which one is better the Nvidia or should I stick with the Intel video chip ?

I don't know much about this :S
so I was hoping any of you with more experience in video games and video cards can guide me in the right direction ... what's the criteria I should consider ? what more info should I know about each card, and which one do you recommend ?

I want the video card to be able to play various games including new ones ...

I've noticed that Intel chip doesn't have anti-aliasing
and for example Assassin's Creed Game ran a bit slowly on it ...

also is NVIDIA Geforce the same as just NVIDIA?

if anyone can help me with this I'd really appreciate it, I've spent hours researching on the internet about it, but I couldn't understand :S there were a lot of details that I found confusing :$

Don't even waste your money on that card. The most importnant thing when buying new graphic cards, is the class. You'll have to choose what class your going for; low-end, med-end or high-end. The 9500 you choosed, is very low-end. When browsing graphic cards from NVIDIA, never look at cards that has 1000 - 5000 within its name. Go for the 6000, 8000, (and some olders has 9000).

Isn't a 9500 better than 6000 or 8000 or 9000 ? since 9500 has a higher number, version is supposedly newer

Ohh, sorry for the confusing post, but I was in a hurry.

What I meant was 100 - 500, like a 8600 is much better than e.g a 9500.
Go to www.tomshardware.com, for charts on what card you should be getting.
One other thing that's importnant is the amount of money you want to spend.

9500 is crap. I have 8800 GTX 768 MB RAM on my PC and Crysis was playable with highest quality .

My 260 GTX 216 SP is also pretty sweet in games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
They aren't even that expensive anymore.

The NVIDIA 9500 is NVIDIA's lowest end card. For that price, you're much better off with an ATI 4850 because, at the moment, ATI is considerably better than NVIDIA at price/performance. If you want to spend a little more, go for a 5770 or a 5850. These are two amazing cards which will play pretty much anything you can throw at them.

As far as ATI cards go, bigger numbers = better. The first number is the card generation, "5" is the current generation, however a high end 4th generation card will beat a low end 5th generation card at some games. The 5770 is ATI's current mid-range card. Cards with higher numbers are high end cards, cards with lower numbers are low end cards.

NVIDIA Geforce is the same as just NVIDIA. NVIDIA cards which start with a "9" are the previous generation. New NVIDIA cards only have three numbers instead of four, so you'd probably be better off with a GTS250 instead of a 9500 if you decided to choose NVIDIA. NVIDIA's mid-range card would probably be the GTX260. As with before, anything with a higher number (except the 9xxx series) is a high end card, anything with a lower number is a low end card.

Intel graphics is not designed with games in mind, it is only designed for lightweight activities like web browsing. If you stick with your Intel "card", your computer will struggle with most modern games. Even a cheap NVIDIA/ATI card is better than what came with your computer.

EDIT: Do you plan on installing the card yourself or getting someone else to install it?

this is an old thread but it's basically same question for those of you who are more tech savvy.
I currently have a "NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT" video card and I feel it's time for an update ...
what should I get ? which ones are considered a significant update from what I have ?
is the GTX series better than GT ?
and I'd like to stick with Nvidia.

all depends on your budget, and your current parts. Send me a reply with your budget and current system. If you have a PSU with at least 500 watts, and a motherboard compatible with PCI-E, and the space to fix a modern GPU, you could easily upgrade to a 700 series card depending on budget.

The budget doesn't matter because our prices are very different from what they'd be in other countries ... Example I got a new 1000 watt power supply for much cheaper than they'd be sold in other countries.
But how much is the 700 series anyway ?
How do i know if my motherboard is compatible with PCI-E ?
I used a program called : system information
It says Intel DH55HC (XUI)
chipset model Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge
Southbridge Model H55
it also says under system slots that i have 3PCI slots
don't know if that's useful.
For the CPU it says Intel Core i3 CPU 530 @2.93GHZ, cores 2, threads 4

It will also depend if i can find the 700 series in my country, if i found a 500 or 600 gtx series would that be good too ?

Hi, Sam! As StealthyCactus mentioned it largely depends on your budget. You can get semi-objective evaluation of a GPU here. There it says, that nVidia GTX660 Ti is the best if you consider quality/price. I'd myself suggest GTX770. It would cost around $310 or 470000 Lebanese pounds (if my currency info is accurate ). Adjusting to international trading shenanigans, it can cost more or less. I myself have GTX670 and it can run every single game maxed out on a 2560*1440 display. GTX770 can do even better. Anyway, consult with your local distributor about the price. And you can forget about AMD if you're not going to mine cryptocurrency.
