Oni on time

In the past I often played Oni on time.
My personal record to play Oni in one piece was 2:35 [h:mm] half a year ago.
Three months later I reached 2:14 [h:mm] and I asked me, where is my limit?

My goal was to play all chapters including cutscenes at full risk in less then 2 hours
(this time I mean each chapter in one piece and not the whole game in one piece).

Now, I have reached my goal.
The summary of my times for all chapters is 1:55:27 [h:mm:ss] < 2 hours.

I recorded them with Taksi and Audacity and uploaded the results to YouTube.
YouTube has a time limit of 10 minutes for uploads, so I had to split chapter 12 in two pieces.
For chapter 08 I recorded a new version today, uploaded it in one piece to YouTube and removed the both old versions.

I know, I could have done all without cutscenes, but I wanted to show a complete overview over all Oni chapters.
I hope you find them usefull.

Here are my movies at YouTube:
Oni on time - Chapter 01 - Syndicate Warehouse
Oni on time - Chapter 02 - Manufacturing Plant
Oni on time - Chapter 03 - Bio-Research Lab
Oni on time - Chapter 04 - Airport Assault
Oni on time - Chapter 05 - Airport Cargo Hangars
Oni on time - Chapter 06 - TCTF Regional HQ
Oni on time - Chapter 07 - Atmospheric Conversion Center (exterior)
Oni on time - Chapter 08 - Atmospheric Conversion Center (interior)
Oni on time - Chapter 09 - Regional State Building
Oni on time - Chapter 10 - Rooftops
Oni on time - Chapter 11 - Doctor Hasegawa's Lab
Oni on time - Chapter 12a - TCTF Science Prison (part 1)
Oni on time - Chapter 12b - TCTF Science Prison (part 2)
Oni on time - Chapter 13 - TCTF Regional HQ (redux)
Oni on time - Chapter 14 - Syndicate Mountain Compound

And here are my times for each chapter in [h:mm:ss]:
Chapter 01 - 0:05:57
Chapter 02 - 0:09:29
Chapter 03 - 0:06:52
Chapter 04 - 0:04:54
Chapter 05 - 0:08:41
Chapter 06 - 0:06:58
Chapter 07 - 0:08:16
Chapter 08 - 0:09:00
Chapter 09 - 0:09:29
Chapter 10 - 0:04:52
Chapter 11 - 0:09:26
Chapter 12 - 0:12:05
Chapter 13 - 0:09:38
Chapter 14 - 0:09:50
Summary   - 1:55:27 < 2 hours

You can also watch them here:
http://youtube.com/group/onitoo
The group onitoo at YouTube includes only chapter 01, but all movies are connected to a chain with respones.

Many thanks to geyser and paradox-01 for their tips and to Tyr for his nice comment at YouTube. smile

Can anyone time how many of the 1:55:27 are actual gameplay?

A finished project, what can be better! The record is made up by you. "Glückwunsch" smile smile smile

Thought on a side: how geyser said and for me it is a bit horrifying: our favourite game hasn’t more than ~ 1:40 [h:mm] gameplay. wink
It screams for more levels. When will the day come? big_smile roll

You see, it's worse than you thought.
The pure gameplay is only 1:12:25 [h:mm:ss].^^

SektorZ said half a year ago, he would have needed for Oni without cutscenes approx. an hour.
I couldn't believe it, but now I must admit, that his time indication was almost realistic.

During the gameplay I learned more moves.
When I look back, I could have played some chapters better.
But it is as it is, a finished project. smile

Re: Oni on time

@ Tyr: You can retrieve the FLV files from your browser's cache and play them back with the VLC player.
You can also ask Tracker to upload his movies in WMV onto oni2.net and to give you a download link.

@ paradox-01: New levels would take ages to design. Longer gameplay can be achieved with the original levels though.

I hear Half-Life can be finished in half an hour...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTUOn2EUFhk
So Oni is not all that short after all. Hurray smile

EDIT: Apparently any YouTube account can be converted to a Director account.
Being a Director allows you to upload movies without a limitation on size and length.
If this is true, I'm not sure why everybody doesn't get a Director's account and go crazy.
Anyway, people all over YouTube are using that feature to upload speed demos and such.
In Tracker's case though, I'd definitely try and beat Chapter 12 in under 10 minutes smile

Re: Oni on time

I played chapter 12 in 12:05 [mm:ss].
The cutscenes last for 6:27, so I needed 5:38 for the gameplay.
If I would try to beat chapter 12 in less then 10 minutes, I had only 3:33 time for the gameplay.
It's very hard, to manage this.

On the other way:
The long cutscene in chapter 12 with the dialog between Konoko and Kerr lasts for exacly 4 minutes.
Sometimes it happens, that sequence can be skipped and Konoko is able to operate the Console directly.
Meanwhile I experienced this 2 times, but mostly I get an "Blam" error, when I try to use this way.
If it works, it's definitely possible to play chapter 12 in less then 10 Minutes.

when you enter Kerr's lab and don't say "hello uncle".^^

Re: Oni on time

Heh. The coolest in this all is that Kerr is still alive. As for the missing talk, I'm sure it will be no big loss for most Oni fans out there smile
"Blah blah blah Daodan blah blah blah Muro's your brother blah blah (gets shot) Bleeaaagh!"

Another random thought: about gameplay and speed runs and crazy ideas.
You know how you can save a lot of time picking items by rolling/sliding?
Well, some civilians make you wish you could use a similar trick on them.
Dunno, rip out whatever they have with some special "mugging" throw smile

If I would try to beat chapter 12 in less then 10 minutes, I had only 3:33 time for the gameplay.

Hm. Yeah, spoke too quickly. 3:33 is indeed impossible. 3:40 is the limit.
And that's with all doors unlocked, all turrets neutralized, all enemies passive etc.
Just ran from console to console and from cutscene to cutscene as quick as I could.

About Kerr's cutscene: I'm not sure about the Blam, but the cutscene is not supposed to play if there are "active" enemies nearby.
The engine scans 4 "trigger volumes" for enemies whenever you enter Kerr's lab, and if it finds at least one, the cutscene won't play.
The volumes scanned are the lab itself and the areas in front of both entrances (roughly square portions of the corridors).
However, Oni's engine also makes enemies "inactive" when you leave them behind or out of sight. And inactive enemies don't count smile
In your case, there were a lot of enemies next to one entrance of Kerr's lab. As you've seen, they've kept the cutscene from playing.
I recommend a slightly different method, though (see below).

So...
I consider it as a bug that the console in Kerr's lab is unlocked before Kerr's talk. This level is rather full of more or less nasty bugs.
But let's assume we want to exploit this bug. Then the surest way is to lure some enemies into Kerr's lab and use the console then.
A very convenient enemy for that is the SWAT who guards the other entrance to Kerr's lab: he's isolated and unarmed.

Here are my "instructions" for a somewhat more elegant "goodbye uncle, sorry can't stay, send me an email" smile

Ignore the first patrol (SWAT + TCTF with VDG). Jump to the lower gallery and run to the far console room ("near"/"far"/"middle" are relative to the end where you enter the galleries)
Just as you did, but I recommend to start with the far room (when making your way past the SWAT with the pistol, knock him down and take the pistol if you want to)
(maybe take the two hypos from the scientists since we may want to use overpower a lot in SP4)
After activating the far console, go back to the lower gallery and go to the middle console room (maybe take the force field from the girl: it'll come in handy when dealing with grenade launchers)
After activating the middle console, go back to the lower gallery and go to the near console room (the SWAT who used to guard the near entrance should now be chasing you; just keep running)
After activating the near console, go to the near lab entrance, but don't enter until the SWAT has left the console room. Make sure he follows you into Kerr's lab, then make a run for the console. You should have no trouble activating it before he catches up with you.
Now run out the far lab entrance, and into the lower gallery through the middle console room. Grab the phase cloak.
The phase cloak should last long enough for you to activate the next console and go into the laser yard unnoticed (so you don't need to kill the guard at all, and you can spare a few seconds).

For the rest of the level you probably don't need any advice, but I just feel like writing down my impressions (after looking at your stuff and making a few tries myself) smile

The laser yard depends a lot on luck... The obvious tip it to stay close to the locked door and to go through as soon as the first team of two (the one with the Screamer) is done.
If you're lucky, the guy with the SBG will see you at the very first moment. Then he'll startle and fire at once, without aiming (even though his fellow is in the way, hehe smile ).
When you get out of the laser yard, you don't have to bother with the SWAT on the stairs to your right; you can head left instead, and get to the final room much faster.
You should still have some shield left, which should let you deal with the SBG guy in the acid room (overpower?) and maybe grab a new shield from him.
Finally, if you managed to grab both an SBG and a shield, you should have no trouble cleaning up the area and activating the crane very quickly smile

I am glad, that I could save uncle Kerr's life.^^
Your "instructions" sounds like a GPS guide through chapter 12 of Oni.
A secure way without "Blam" errors.
Very good ideas! smile
I played chapter 12 in 7:54 [m:ss], but I made mistakes in savepoint 4 and got some damage.
I try to record a better version, but not today, maybe tomorrow.
Thank you for the information. smile

One or two times I also saw that the door closed while the SBG guy behind the door shot, killing himself tongue (free hypo and SBG big_smile)

Re: Oni on time

That door closes/locks the first time when either guy from the first group takes a few steps down the ramp.
That's unavoidable even if you manage to be invisible somehow (it would be cool to sneak through...)
The second time, it closes just like any door, depending on who has entered/left the door's vicinity.

Re: Oni on time

I recorded a new version of chapter 12.
With geyser's tips I improved the time from 12:05 to 07:39 [mm:ss].
I could avoid the 4-minute dialog between Konoko and Kerr.
In addition I could save a bit gameplay.
I didn't need to split the video, because it is smaller than 10 minutes now.

Here is a updated list of my videos at YouTube:

Oni on time - Chapter 12 - TCTF Science Prison
Oni on time - Chapter 13 - TCTF Regional HQ (redux)
Oni on time - Chapter 14 - Syndicate Mountain Compound

And here are the times for each chapter splitted in cutscenes and gameplay:

Re: Oni on time

I haven't watched all your vids yet, only part of number 1, but just so you know, you can save a lot of time in places by sliding as you do things like reloading or picking up items. Also, you didn't have to talk to the warehouse manager and break the back of the Syndicate dude attacking him: just let them "fight" as you activate the computer to the right of the door, then go through.

Nonetheless, that's a pretty impressive speedrun aside from those issues.

Work in progress...

Re: Oni on time

Strangely it never occurred to me before seeing this to even try a speed run through the game.
I've always done what I could to make it as difficult as possible and use all the combos as often as possible just to get the full experience I think I'll give a speed run a shot probably won't do to well though I just want to fight everything that hops out at me.

@Ultimatum479
You are right. If I look back, I could have done something better.
Moves like sliding and picking up items I learned during I recorded my movies and used it from time to time later (e.g. in chapter 8, 12 and 14).
But you "have" to talk to the warehouse manager in chapter 1, because the console is locked until you have made this.
@Magus
There are several ways to play Oni.
My goal in this thread was, to play Oni in less than 2 hours and to give other people a complete overview over the whole game at YouTube.

I totally understand where you were coming from, my shock was more because I hadn't considered doing it myself being a life long gamer, I usually attempt to take different approaches to things... look for easter eggs, and stuff like that. My website link will take you to my counterstrike clan, as an example. Anyhow putting oni out there in any way is great, my biggest problem with loving the game is next to none of the gamers I regularlly play with have any idea what it is, at least now I can point them to your youtube vids.
I've started a speed run trial myself... so far I'm 15 seconds behind you, watching your videos helped, I'll let you know how it works out in the end...
Also what capture app did you use to make the videos?
I keep getting an error trying to use FRAPS to record oni gameplay.

Re: Oni on time

To capture my videos, I use the freeware Taksi:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/taksi

In the Oni - Options I choose a resolution of 640x480 pixels.
In Taksi I use the Microsoft MPEG-4 Codec V1 (or V2, if V1 is not available).
In addition I choose a target frame rate of 25 fps and activate the checkbox "Half Size Video Frame".
With this values, I get an AVI file in resolution 320x240 pixels, which is the right format for YouTube.

To cut the begin and the end of the AVI file, I use the freeware VirtualDub:
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

If you choose "Video - Direct Stream Copy" and "Audio - Direct Stream Copy", you can save the result directly.
In this case, no changes at the video and the audio compression will be made.

Taksi isn't able to record sound.
For audio recording I use the freeware Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
(you can also use the shareware Goldwave)

You can cut any nice song in wav format or you can record the original Oni sound, if you connect the ear phone and the front line-in with a stereo cable.
To record Oni sounds, it's enough, if you use 11025 Hz in mono, because Oni doesn't support stereo sounds.

Now you have a video AVI file and a audio WAV file.

To create a WMV file for YouTube I use ULead Video Studio 9.
Older versions are much cheaper than the actual version, but absolute sufficient.

It's a bit complicated to arrange the video and the audio track, when you use the original Oni sound.
To create the resulting WMV file, I use a profile with a resolution of 320x240 and a bit rate about 200 Kbps.
The quality isn't very good, but good enough for YouTube.^^

Re: Oni on time

ouch, informative but a little more complex than I was hoping for... not sure how well I could even play with my resolution that low my monitor's native resolution is 1600x1200 and complains now and then when I run oni, because it wants to run at a higher resolution as it is.  Being as how I have a really high end system think I could get away with recording at a higher resolution then cutting it down?
I have half a dozen different video apps on here. It's not imperitive that I do record the game, but I had a couple of things in mind... though it's much easier when FRAPS does all the work for you, I can make videos of counterstrike gameplay pretty much on the fly.

The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.

Re: Oni on time

@ Magus: Run it in 640x480 with -noswitch, and you should be fine.
And of course you can use FRAPS if you own an unlimited version.
Taksi is just a freeware (and somewhat crippled) alternative to it.

Re: Oni on time

You have inspired me to do my own Oni speed run. I have already improved several of your levels. Are you prepared to defend your title?
