DemOni

OK, this would be the first official release by the oni2.net team.

DemOni. Technically, it's yet another download link for Oni's demo. No retail-only content is included.
However, we included Chapter 2, which was available in the first demo (later replaced by Chapter 4).
We also included a basic version of our "Daodan" thingie. It's a DLL that Oni.exe loads at startup.
The DLL then patches the EXE at runtime, fixing bugs, unlocking features, adding new stuff...
The nice thing is: all the demo content is thus distributed in its original state. No patches.
Major features: fixed Blam at startup; cheats; Developer Mode; DirectInput controls.

Installation is easy as in "piece of cake".
1) Download demoni.exe (self-extracting ZIP, 86.8 MB) somewhere (for example, to C:\Games)
You now have (for example) C:\Games\demoni.exe on your computer.
2) "Run" it. You will be prompted for a folder to extract to: by default, that's the folder you downloaded to (for example, C:\Games)
If you extract to C:\Games, you'll then find DemOni in C:\Games\Oni. Run Oni.exe or windowed.bat to play.

Read readme2.txt for a vague parody of documentation.
Enjoy. Get your friends (and enemies) to download this thing smile

The above download includes the latest Daodan DLL and "nikanabo" mod pack.
(the main download will be updated as more features become available)
(but rather than downloading it again, you'd just upgrade "nikanabo" and Daodan)

EdT still has to compile a Mac version... wink

Re: DemOni

Hmm... hmm
It runs for a second, doesn't open any windows, then closes.

Oh wait.... Right-click->Extract to. smile

Re: DemOni

Right-click? In my world a left-click works sad
It's supposed to be a self-extracting ZIP... hmm
Anyone else who can't open with left-click? wink
Seriously: downloaded, tested, works fine.

Re: DemOni

I am not sure how the word "DemOni" was created.
One thing for sure is that "Demoni" in Italian stands  for "demons",
and it can be right pronounciated in order to let "Dem" and "Oni" sound like separate words.

My only complaint in this whole story is that you are a Windows user, Geyser (no one is perfect after all!)

What if this is as good as it gets?

Re: DemOni

The name "demoni" was coined by SFeLi during a dev talk session smile
Basically a shorter way to say "Oni Demo", that also refers to Oni=Demon.
I'm not sure about the proper way to capitalize it: demoni? DemOni? Demoni? demOni?

and it can be right pronounciated in order to let "Dem" and "Oni" sound like separate words.

Not sure I understood that one.

"We can't all, and some of us don't. That's all there is to it." wink
At least I'm not eager to get Vista. And I'm part-time on Linux, too.

Re: DemOni

Uhm... to say demon in Italian you can use either "demonio" or "demone". The plural is written in just one  way (that is "demoni") but it can be pronounciated in two different modes. In the former  the stress is placed in the first syllable (dèmoni), in the latter it is placed in the second syllable (demòni). In order to spell out "demòni" correctly you can try this game:imagine "Dem" and "Oni" are separate words, and say them one after another as quickly as you can. So you have it! smile

Btw, nice job with the people at projectmagma.net!

Re: DemOni

OK, double accent: all clear. So maybe dEmOni (dèmòni) would be the right spelling smile
I think I'll keep DemOni for front-end stuff and "demoni" for filenames and such.
Not sure how I'd write the DemOni logo, though (if I were to redesign it). Suggestions?
It would be nice to have a few visual extras for DemOni (splashscreen, Bink movies)
(higher-res textures are a whole other story; I wouldn't focus on those right now...)

I've settled on xdelta for diffing and patching.
For DemOni, it should serve all our needs.
Might release the first upgrade Soon(TM).

Btw, nice job with the people at projectmagma.net!

Heh. Sure... Do what I can...

Re: DemOni

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Upgrade!
(sigh)

HERE is the first set of binary patches for DemOni.
No level-specific stuff yet, except for Warehouse Ninjas
(they're not spawned by original scripts, but they're there wink ).

No modified melee profiles (yet), no smart alarm running (yet). The dashing Strikers and Comguys are there.
All of Konoko's combos are of course unlocked. There are a few rather nice additions to the arsenal, too wink
Minor glass modding (only the basic motion trails break glass, not the character-specific ones). Glass hurts.

All this needs further modding: right now, the single-player missions are nowhere near challenging.
If you want to make things even more unfair for the AI, be sure to grab the latest Daodan HERE.
It's not much, but the new weapons and cheats should keep you having fun until the last release smile
Note: the new cheats are not unique to the demo; everyone (on PC) should be able to enjoy them.

Re: DemOni

Script: express yourself. What exactly doesn't work?
If it's of any help, I can provide a regular ZIP...

The executable file simple doesn't work. We have to extrat the files manualy. Why did you not use the winrar self archive extract aplication?

Re: DemOni

Because I wanted to see if this executable worked, first.
I don't have WinRAR and am not planning on getting it, sorry.

I'll make a new release soon, hopefully self-extractable by anyone.
Then again, maybe I'll just make it a ZIP to keep everyone happy.

Re: DemOni

There's a readme supplied with the "demoni" patch. THIS one.
The coolest stuff is probably the extra weapons and dashing enemies.
Glass that hurts can be fun, but there's little of it except at the Airport.
(shoot a glass pane above an enemy, and he will be hurt or killed)
Glass-breaking combos are limited to a few per character right now.
(Konoko's front kick and running kick, Striker's third punch, etc)

BTW, wanted features for DemOni can be discussed here as well as HERE.
Global upgrades are the priority right now. More challenging AI, for one thing.

Re: DemOni

About the buggy self-extractor... Looks like the one I released is messed up.
And I just had too many versions around and kept checking the wrong one.
I uploaded a fixed version. Thanks everybody for your feedback.

I used THIS self-extracting tool on a regular ZIP.
