262.  When you start thinking of possible ways to create a fully functional mercury bow.

Hmm...

Take a pipe of a really tough bronze (less friction!)
Cut a horizontal slit in it for 3/4 of the pipe.
Bolt on two 10 gauge springsteel plates in front.
On the end of each plate, attach some really tough stringy stuff. If you can get your hands on it, thickly braided spider silk will do
Make a mould exactly as thick as the diameter of your pipe.
Pour in some mercury.
Bath in liquid nitrogen, or put it outside if you happen to live in a suitably cold environment (freezes at approx. -39°)
Take some cylindrical object exactly as thick as your pipe, put it in it, attach the strings.
Put in the mercury sliver and pull like hell.

Oh: Modern crossbows like the Horton Legend reach speeds over 90 m/s. Assuming we have a 3/4" pipe and a 10 cm sliver, we'd get almost 1600 joules. Of course, this sliver is much, MUCH heavier than a bolt, but still...
