for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

hey fella, you seem to know your oni-ons haha.

You up for a challenge of going through my oni install to try and help me troubleshoot why it loads up to the menu but i get major graphic corruption meaning i cant make out anything on the main menu so therefore cant even start playing.  .........im am no stranger to helping others out on forums so i can save your sanity by following instructions and providing clear info.... in english also!

i have read all threads on this forum and have got hold of all mentioned patched xp exes and the dll file and i have tried compatability modes i even tried the nvidia fix someone put up. i can supply you with startup .txt files etc at each stage and i have kept all the fix files i found -im able to do a fresh install of oni based on your help and will provide what you ask for at every stage of patching it.

i read a thread where you tried to help some polish dude and i can promise i wont be that much trouble to communicate with wink

ps i also have renamed the intro vid file so it skips that...still cant see the menu ...i can uplaod a photo of how it looks if you do fancy helping me out at all

cheers if you do.

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

The only difference between your startup.txt and mine is that most "direct sound" stuff is zero for me.
Did you try running Oni in 98-compatibility mode and/or with the -noswitch command-line parameter?
Also, did you try tweaking your DirectX control panel as suggested by Script10k in a few other threads?

cheers for reply i have an audigy 2 zs card by creative so do you get 0's due to using a basic soundcard? or somehow limiting the ability of your card?

i have tried the 98 compat mode and i also have tried the -noswitch  but can you type out exactly what my shortcut should be just so im sure.....

[edit- ok got the noswitch to work and that just makes the oni game not run fullscreen but puts it up top left and still exactly the same graphic corruption on the menu..btw i hear music on the menu screen]

as for the script10k stuff only thing i found on here about that word was a user with that name telling people about a dll file which i have got can u link me the thread - i did go through the whole forum like but im only human i guess i missed that

[edit 2- have looked at all of script10ks posts in the help and troubleshooting section and nothing on any thread helps me]

is this a new one on you mate?

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

"is this a new one on you mate?" Stop trying to be colloquial, please.

"do you get 0's due to using a basic soundcard?" Probably. Laptop here.

Script10k keeps directing people to his Help section here (scroll down):
http://script10000.oni2.net/patches.html
Most Nvidia folks walk away all happy after hacking their Direct X.
Apart from DX settings per se, there's a piece of advice on drivers.
"I suggest nvidia users install a driver version between 28.x and 60.x."
Meaning that you're better off not using Nvidia's most recent drivers.
I myself have an ATI; I'd rather let Script10k help you out from here on.

Unless Script or other Nvidia users have more ideas, old drivers look like the only way to go, yes. If you're done toying with DX, that is.
Sorry for the grumbling. I usually help people in a somewhat lighter mood, or at least without turning down excessive cheerfulness neutral

All speech is dialectic, geyser, yours most definitely included. Don't try it.

Don't try what? I have my reasons to be edgy these days. And I have no idea what he meant with his (probably idiomatic) "is this a new one on you mate?" smile
As for the dialectics of speech, I'm not sure what you mean, either. Anyway, even if it's constructive criticism, it's definitely off-topic here. Let's go elsewhere.

all i meant by that comment was this.... before i joined i read the forum alot and noticed in most of the problems you were the one to solve them or at least provide people with the most solutions or possible checks to enable others to fix onis issues....... so it was meant with respect for how many threads you have answered and the many various problems people have had. Also as time goes on and video drivers keep getting released it was my way of saying 'could this be a 'future problem' for oni users - ie nvidia card owners with newer cards on newer drivers.

nvm anyway

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

Yes, I don't remember anything like your problem ever showing up on these boards.
Or rather... That same Script10k uploaded ingame screenshots with similar textures...
I don't know how he got past the main menu, but the textures were scrambled like yours.
AFAIR he didn't highlight this as troubleshooting, but said something about a bad driver.
You should definitely follow Script's advice on the driver range, or get in touch with him.

in the mornig i will try and old driver version and if that has no effect i might ask script aboit his experiences with later nvidia drivers and oni - oh well least theres 2 last chances to get oni working on my box

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

OK, i managed to get Oni working on my xp system! Get in!

All I did was install the 56.72 nvidia drivers off the link on script10ks site
then it worked fine
so i upped the ante and installed the 61.77 drivers from same link
they worked fine

so then i thought id be greedy and put some very recent nvidia drivers on my system again....
163.71, couldnt believe it when they worked also!

also here's the startup.txt after loading up oni then exiting it...

compared to my original startup.txt when the menu was messed up there is 1 big difference i can see not far from the bottom

"OpenGL version = 2.1.1"

could it be that opengl 2.1.2 - which is what i had when the menu was garbled doesnt work with oni and 2.1.1 is fine?

im now going to completely uninstall oni and start from the top again with the install and various patches then i shall edit this post of mine with the minimum steps in case anyone else finds it of use.

thanks to Geyser i can finally lay my 98 system to rest, cheers. cool

Hm, indeed that could be an issue. I didn't notice that difference the first time around, but I have a 1.5.4582 there... smile

"im now going to completely uninstall oni and start from the top again with the install and various patches"
If you provide a complete overview of the graphic issues one can have with an Nvidia, that'll be awesome.

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

ok ive uninstalled oni and shift deleted the directory as it left it due to debugtxt being in there and startup (basically files that get created AFTER oni installs)

btw all the time now im still using the very recent nvidia drivers i mentioned above.

installed oni -normally installed no errors or problems on install

ok ran oni.........it ran fine no patches etc.........

so i went inot the nvidia control panel to where you can set graphic options for individual programs and i looked at the new entry i made for oni....... the extension limit setting for opengl was still set to ON

i set it to OFF and launched oni again.....blam it crashed - this error message came up after the intro video just as it should be going to the menu.

so i went back in to nivida control panel and changed the extension limit back to ON

it works fine and im playing oni on my xp system with sp2 and a recent nvidia driver.....

im now going to reboot and see if that makes any difference as i havent rebooted during these changes/reinstalling

will post back as an edit on this thread

EDIT
after a reboot it still works fine with extension limit to ON
changing it to OFF still results in oni crahing between intro movie ending and menu loading up

btw this is with a completely unpatched oni install.

im now going to try the very latest nvidia drivers off the nvidia website as the recent ones im using now are direct off pny the people who make my geforce 7 7800 gs card

more to follow......

FINAL EDIT

Installed latest Nvidia drivers direct from their website......version 169.21

ran with limit on and limit off -as expected off caused blam crash
on allowed me to play oni.....thing is, and this is where it gets interesting......

i now have latest nvidia drivers running.....
i have a clean install of oni without any patches applied to it
i have extension limit set to ON in the nvida control panel

my startup.txt is below......

key thing here is the opengl version again as previously having 2.1.2 meant i had major menu graphic corruption

however now we can see it is using 2.1.2 and working fine.

begs the question what did those old nvidia drivers (that script recommended) put on my machine that has managed to enable me to run oni with latest nvidia drivers/opengl version perfectly?

im done on input and testing here unless anyone adds to this something they can think of testing-wise or explanation-wise.

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

There's no need to extensively test the extension limit Blam, as it's the single most documented bug here (seen the sticky?).
It's bound to Blam if you turn off the "extension limit" on recent Nvidias and don't use a fix (Daodan DLL or patched EXE).
Please rule that GL extension Blam out either way, and only report the things that have apparently nothing to do with it.

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

seems the opengl version may not have been to blame for the menu graphic corruption after all

i honestly have no idea, i havent lied about any of the changes i made as i got oni working ....... it just seems that putting those old 5x.xx drivers back on seemed to sort out whatever was the problem as lets face it the startup logs show the opengl was 2.1.2 when it wasnt working....then 2.1.1 when it was ...then 2.1.2 finally and its working.

i do not have the experience to know what has changed and as you are on ati i guess its down to another nvidia user with oni to be able to shed some light on possible reasons its working now. maybe script?

maybe it has nothing to do with opengl within nvidia drivers and it was some other file in there that was to blame for my graphic corruption...

so i guess the bottom line is ...if like me you get graphicv corruption on the menu of oni using an nvidia card get old drivers such as 5x.xx and then it should make oni work using the extension limit also and then you should be able to update to latest nvidia drivers and still have oni working....with extensions limit ON of course! hope this helps others... wink

Re: for GEYSER -oni xp challenge

I am sure (if what you said was correct) that old drivers have included some files/registry change that makes oni works well. Have you unistalled all drivers via control panel/add remove, and just then updated for the  more recent recent? Or you just installed over and over the "old" ones?
