The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Hello everybody,
I offered to redo the soundtrack (it's a few posts down.)

My name is Terry and together with my companion Thomas I will strive to achieve something worthy of the original soundtrack.
We both study at the Academy for Popculture in The Netherlands, and we are beginning a business in soundtracks (Don't Worry, this is for free)
We have stuck are heads out to get some experience at scoring for games. We now feel comfortable that we can actually help you make this Anniversary Edition an even more  amazing experience. Over the coming time we will be writing music based on triggers we pick up from watching Egoroffie's let's play over and over again and on the original soundtrack. Our goal is to deliver one piece per week. Once we have a nice pool of sounds we will go over every trigger and see what fits where. Then we will cut the loops to be modular. We will give a detailed report of our findings about placement and then we would like to hand it over to one of you for programming. (It is up to you wether or not you use the report.)

We are computer savvy but we're not capable of coding this. Is there anyone who wants to program the loops to spring on the (existing) triggers?

This topic wouldn't be any use if you people are to afraid to give us feedback, so please do speak up if you have a suggestions or questions.
Your input means alot to us! Let's make this game an even more amazing experience together!

We will post links to soundcloud containing every piece we've made so far: (updated freq.)

Syndicate Warehouse Impression (Note: On Terry's Soundcloud)

Static Loop for a.o. Musashi Manufacturing (Note: replacement suggestion in description on soundcloud.)

"Fight" (Work In Progress) (added March 27th)
As a possible replacement for "Fight" maintaining the heavy breaks from the original.

East Wind Tribute (added April 15th)

Up and Away (Asian Ambient) (added April 15th)

Ambient Suite (Preview) (added June 6th)

Ambient Suite (Hasegawa's Lab) (added August 31st)

Thanks in advance, and keep in touch! wink

Sorry about the links, I'll make those clickable for you.  You probably will have the ability to post URLs after several more posts, but it's disabled for new users.  I'm looking forward to seeing your work!  I'm sure I'll have feedback as time goes on smile  Have you had the opportunity to study Oni's existing music format so you know how it's sliced up?

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Here is a link to the music in Oni: http://wiki.oni2.net/Music/Ingame

My suggestion would to extract a specific piece of music from Oni, for example: mus_asian.  Then you would create you piece as a replacement for the original mus_asian.  The process is similar for us to replace existing textures.

We will be glad to help anyway we can.

Looking forward to your project!

as you wish .. i was thinking since others already gave the feedback he's asking for there, seems redundant ... i thought merging mine to his will put the other posts below his.

Nope, we can't control the order of posts, and it's always strictly by date.  I assumed that Terry had seen that feedback since he knew it was "a few posts down".

Edited the thread to include new loop for "Fight". However, in the process I was forced to disband the URL's again, I still cannot post links.

I like the music!  Curious, have you guys maybe taken any inspiration from Alexander Brandon?  (Composer for games such as Tyrian, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Deus Ex).  I feel like I detect a hint...  Which is awesome, even if it's not accurate.  I love his style.

His work, especially on Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was nothing short of amazing. smile

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Agreed!!  Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was my favorite game for a while, and I guarantee the music had a big hand in that, though I didn't realize it at the time.  I still listen to that soundtrack sometimes these days.

Hey Leus!
On a completely personal note, YES! I bloody love Alexander Brandon's work. Especially fond of the Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War soundtracks he did. But I got introduced to his work trough Jazz Jackrabbit 2 aswell. Martin'O'Donnel en Alexander Brandon are definetly my two favorite game-composers ever smile

And thanks for all your positive comments so far!

Now I'll start working on a replacement for "Up and Away (Asian Ambient)"
Sincerely,
Terry

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Hey everybody, I have added 2 new previews on soundcloud.
(@Iritscen , can you add the URL's to the main post?)

East Wind Tribute - soundcloud.com/mengermeester/oni-ae-east-wind-tribute
This track is a signature for Oni in my opinion, therefore we kept it relatively much like the original.

Up and Away (Asian Ambient) - soundcloud.com/mengermeester/oni-ae-up-and-away-asian
Once again, I am personally attached to this little gem. The original is heard (fact-check?) a.o. after Konoko rams the truck in the warehouse.

Once again, we are very intrested in your opinions!
Cheers,
Terry

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Once again I've run out of time to listen, but I did hear most of East Wind, very nice.  I agree that it's difficult to imagine replacing East Wind with something else.  By the way, a complete list of tracks used in Oni is found here: http://wiki.oni2.net/Music/Ingame.

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Despite being extremely short, Up and Away is one of my favorite tracks from Oni. I really liked your version of it, it added a more modern feel to it but preserved the overall sound of the original, thanks for all the hard work!

Re: The soundtrack renewal topic (Updates, Feedback, Discussion)

Menger & Meester, thanks for taking the time for this project. The music is great!  I took the liberty to make a preview package of the of your music.

This preview version is limited, the sounds updated are mus_asianb (East Wind Tribute), mus_amasian1 (Up & Away) and mus_fiteb (Fight!).  I hope I applied to the correct sounds.  I somehow missed the Static Loop music.

The original Oni sounds were composed of several loops that can be randomly played and can include an intro and ending.  However, this version uses a single sound file, there are no intro or ending sounds.

This preview will give you a taste for the renewed soundtrack.

You can get it here: http://edt.oni2.net/temp/60000Soundtrackrenewal.zip
I have included the sound files for PC and Mac.

Note: I tried a few times to upload this to the Mods Depot, but it could not be uploaded due to some unknown error according to the depot.

I tried a few times to upload this to the Mods [sic tongue] Depot, but it could not be uploaded due to some unknown error according to the depot.

Uh-oh.  Alloc did just make a major change to the server today.  Not to point fingers at the cause of the problem without knowing more information, but... well, I guess I just did.  I'll let him know what happened.

Okay, Alloc fixed the upload problem; apparently it wasn't even caused by the server change, just a coincidence.  I uploaded the mod here: http://mods.oni2.net/node/278.  Feel free to tweak the node, EdT, I didn't put much time into it because I was just testing uploads.
