Re: Karma question?

Forums aren't democracies, so there's no need to hold votes on decisions about running the forum.

That's not to say we won't listen to suggestions, but Harry always has the final decision.

No, it's not the same.  Harry is not an uncaring dictator.  If enough people disliked the karma system he would remove it.  But so far you're the only one who actively dislikes it.

Re: Karma question?

I don't care if you "like" it or not, it's part of the forum.

If people are scared of it, then they should think before they post. If there is an abuse of the system I will take that under account.

And that is my final word.

Re: Karma question?

Well, I think he repeated it because people mis-spell Shinatama everywhere, all the time, and we were both being bugged by it.  smile

The system is useful because people find out when the community feels that they are making posts that are not helpful or reasonable.  As far as seeing which posts have been minused, I would just suggest that you will see them going forward and not to worry about past posts.  When you are posting in a thread, and check the responses that come after you, you will notice if your post has been plussed or minused.

So you guys did take my advice big_smile I told you Karma would be helpful lol

Re: Karma question?

1.

2dream (crap, he left already but still: )
You can ignore the karma system like you do but I wonder if you'll listen for someone's who have -100 k.p. advice or give advices to someone who have +100 k.p.
heh, that won't be funny you know.

2.
I agree with Irit. But some people can become hypocritical for earning k.p. and we might lose this kind atmosphere here and lose lulz (lol, the wordplay). We should think what to do to not make Karma earning "the primary main objective" on OCF.

P. S. I wonder what geyser would say in this kind of situation. smile
P. P. S. k.p. = karma points, not Konoko Payne smile

Re: Karma question?

Hmmmm, what about a simple 'thank' system?
I'v seen this around alot of forums, and seems to go pretty well, as you can't get negative.

Re: Karma question?

I've been on Youtube far too long to worry about bad post rating, so I'm not scared of bad karma  tongue

I just don't like the idea behind it. You rate a member up or down (not just a post) without having to state the reason. In essence, noone can "rate your rating" up or down, which gives the karma an air of objectivity that doesn't match reality.

And that's all I have to say on the subject, I won't comment on it any further so if Harry wants to keep the karma system, it's his decision.

Re: Karma question?

@TOCS: I do think there's something to be said for a thanks system, since it avoids hard feelings over bad karma.  But then again, the negatives might help.  I was once on a forum that was much rougher on newbies than a little -1 here and there, and the end result was actually a comfortable environment to come and talk.  Negative verbal feedback taught the new users how to behave in that particular culture (or else they left :-S), so the the specific "rules" of that culture were maintained.

Lately, I know I'm not the only one who had gotten a little worried that our culture was getting distilled by some newbies that weren't understanding our expectations for members, such as proper grammar, not double-posting, doing their own footwork, etc.  As long as we continue to make those expectations clear and don't resort to just silently minusing someone out of passive aggressiveness, the negatives will help reinforce what we tell them is right and wrong behavior.  On that note, we're planning to make a FAQ that would spell out some of the "don'ts" of the forum, among other things; it's just not complete yet.

It looks like somebody needs to rate one of your posts before you get a karma score. Nobody has plussed or minused them yet.
