Re: Oni with 10.6

Nice.  Btw, if your Mac's been running for a while it might be using a gig or two for swapfiles, so potentially some people will see bigger savings than they actually got, because restarting erases the swapfiles.  But I am still gonna love whatever savings I get for my poor hard drive.

Oh, I always thought the swapfiles disk space was claimed right at the launch of the OS.

By the way, Ars Technica has a really interesting in-depth review of 10.6. More technical than usual reviews, and so a lot more interesting if you like this kind of view on the system. I think most of you will enjoy reading it.

Re: Oni with 10.6

With 10.5 at least, only a 64MB swapfile is created at startup.  As you run out of RAM (which unfortunately happens quickly when you do lots of file operations like rebuilding the GDF, because it caches all that data), the OS progressively creates additional swapfiles that are each twice as big as the previous, so 64MB becomes 192MB becomes 448MB, etc.  I usually reclaim over a gig when I restart my computer once a week.

Thanks for the link, these guys mean business when they do reviews!

Re: Oni with 10.6

Ah, it seems that Snow Leopard is redefining GB according to the IEEE definition of "a billion bytes".  That adds to the impression of saved space.  My "72.88 GB" hard drive will become "80 GB" under 10.6, for instance.

Ok, PPC Oni works just like it did under leopard in Snow Leopard.

Here's an example of the ability of Preview to display Collada files:

Re: Oni with 10.6

Nice.  I felt like when we (er, Neo ^_^) adopted Collada, we were a little ahead of the curve (it was just introduced in 2004).  But it seems that support for it is growing, thankfully.  EdT informed me that Blender 2.49 does not work properly in 10.6, but we can be sure that the upcoming 2.5 will, and it will also bring better (hopefully, 100% fixed) Collada support.  Although there's not many Mac-using modders, I'm eager for the release myself.

Re: Oni with 10.6

I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to have decreased temps while playing Oni now. They used to be upper 80s, now they are 75-80C while playing.

Nice. It's sweet to be able to view and manipulate 3d models with the same speed and ease as simple images.

Re: Oni with 10.6

Just installed 10.6, after doing some regular computer tests and maintenance for a day.  Because of the re-definition of byte prefixes, my hard drive capacity went from 72.88GB to 78.25GB.  Proportionally speaking, that should have brought my free space up from 13.88GB to 14.90GB, but instead it ended up at 20.4GB free, thanks to the 5.5GB of data that 10.6 reclaimed from 10.5.

Then I noticed that the Installer placed a bunch of new versions of Apple's programs in /Applications which I already had old copies of, filed under subfolders in /Applications.  Deleting the old apps saved me another 930MB, and while moving the new apps into their places, I started comparing sizes and confirming just how much Apple slimmed down each app.  The major factor is that all the old apps were Universal builds, and the new versions are Intel-only builds (hence the whole 10.6-not-supporting-PPC thing), so for instance:
App      Then      Now
iCal      99MB     52MB
iChat    120MB   53MB
Mail      303MB   78MB

No idea why I saved so much space on Mail there (I don't use the app), but in most cases the apps were roughly 40-50% of their original size because they didn't have PPC code in them anymore.

Then I installed the new Developer Tools, and the update reclaimed another 2.8GB.  Then, because I was on a space-saving high, and because I don't like Adobe anymore, I trashed a bunch of their apps' (that I don't use anymore) support files, which were all over the place in my system, and saved another 1.9GB.  So now I have 25.4GB available. big_smile  Finally I can breathe easier and stop worrying about keeping 15% of my internal drive free.

P.S.: I had to run the display calibration tool in System Preferences > Displays to do what SL was supposed to do automatically -- change the gamma from 1.8 to 2.2  Now we're using the standard (read: Windows default tongue) gamma, which is good news for video and photo editors who use both platforms.

Your hard drive capacity is still the same, its just being described in a different way. wink

Yes, Gumby, I know that, did you read the whole sentence? ^_^

How does Oni run on your computer?

I have no idea.

Re: Oni with 10.6

I'm not sure about this byte prefixe redefinition. Isn't the change the unit used to indicate space (that is, GB in place of Go)?
It would be just a matter of conversion then.
And perhaps that's what Gumby's pointing out.

Re: Oni with 10.6

Snow Leopard uses base 10 instead of base 2 for determining the size of the drive.

Re: Oni with 10.6

What I was really pointing out is that people think, "Oh, I saved x GB of space with 10.6!", but really some of those gigs are just the result of making the entire drive "larger" by using the base-10 measurement.
