Oni, skill?

i was listening to a podcast.  somebody in there saying that hack 'n slash games are just bottom mashers.
He thinks that FPS needed much more skills than most of hack 'n slash games.
i posted ninja gaiden as a counter on that forum.
i am wondering do anyone here consider Oni is a skill intensed game to play?

i do have to say that most FPS with multiplayer mode adds a sense of skill to the genre.
if Oni had a multiplayer, i'd say it could be a game that you need a lot of skills to master it.
but now, it doesn't really need that much skills...
i could kill muro with triple pounch combo easily...

Re: Oni, skill?

Well you can go for the brutal approach which is spamming puches but that tactic only works with one guy at a time.
The other thing you can do is the other cheap approach using hit and running with Running lairiat or slide, but I prefer to use more skill than brutality I use all the attacks and make good combos out of them. So it's only a button masher if you choose to make it one.

Re: Oni, skill?

yeah exactly, if you really want to be cheap just spam moves on them so they cant do anything, but there is no fun in that. I try to vary my moves and don't use my strong stuff all that often (i dont spam Mukades PPKKKK combo on everyone) i always do different stuff.

Re: Oni, skill?

every single player game has stupid exploits and bugs that cant be helped. single player is not a test of skill either, its for you to have fun (unless you think your good cuz you can defeat the computer lol) the only time you can measure your skill is against other human players. I think oni has good potential for multiplayer and there was at some point a project for it (flatline?). the fact that the game can still be changed by mods would help balance the characters (for instance removing that mukade combo), and make it a good skillbased multiplayer game.

Re: Oni, skill?

You're right, playing against humans is a better test of skill.  And probably, if we get multiplayer going, we'll end up having to fix some exploitable moves that people will start complaining about.  Btw, Flatline is still ongoing, although it's not exactly moving quickly.

Re: Oni, skill?

Does what you've got for Flatline so far work well?

If we don't change the direction we're going, we'll likely end up where we're headed.

Takes skill to defeat mutable opponents for sure. Single combat isn't as taxing. Its mostly timing and reflexes.

Re: Oni, skill?

Oh, Muro was saying "multiple"!  I was reading that before like, "Huh?  It's hard to fight changeable opponents?  What does that mean?"

Actually, I had an interesting little discussion on this topic with Loser once, and he informed me that Oni is in fact *not* optimized in any way for group combat.  That's why it's so hard.  Most games these days coordinate group fights so you can only be attacked one at a time or in convenient turns, whereas the AI in Oni attacks any time there's a physical opening to do so, regardless of how many of them there are.

Re: Oni, skill?

Actually, there is a BSL variable controlling how many AI will be allowed to choose the same enemy to attack at once. I think it is set to something like 2 or 3.

Re: Oni, skill?

well, as ive noticed, some of the characters ARE more suited to group combat, Mai for instance is very good, she recovers quickly after executing a move, and many of here blows can knock down several people, whereas ninjas recover slower from moves and dont have quite as much are of effect on their moves, but are prime for 1 v 1

ai2_spacing_cookies (default is 2).

Spawn a bunch of enemies and see what happens when you change it.
